Shul Builders! 120 Years of the Groningen Synagogue
About this activity.
Since 1906, a building has stood in the heart of Groningen that evokes both questions and wonder due to its remarkable architecture. The synagogue on Folkingestraat is more than a monument: it is a silent witness to hope, loss, resilience and renewal. With the exhibition Shul Builders! 120 Years of the Groningen Synagogue, we invite you to discover our remarkable past and present up close.
The exhibition takes you from the first sketches and construction drawings to the festive inauguration in 1906. It then moves on to the significance that the building still has today as a place of culture, celebration and remembrance. Step by step, you will see how the synagogue grew into an iconic building: Jewish in symbolism and orientation, Eastern in its arches and patterns, Christian in its spatial structure and unmistakably Groningen in its materials and craftsmanship.
You will see historical photographs and drawings, but also the story of the journey the architects made in search of suitable inspiration. Thus, a story unfolds in which architecture, history and identity come together. The exhibition conveys how a building can be more than just stone and glass: a place where generations meet, where memories are preserved and where meaning is created again and again.
