De Kunsthof
14 February 2026 to 12 April 2026

About this activity.

The Kunsthof presents a dual exhibition by

Ilona Hakvoort (Groningen 1951)

‘Paint can show what is there, but also what could be there. In us, around us, in the universe. Paint does not only represent nature, or depict it; when I work with paint, it is nature itself.

Flowing, evaporating, rippling, solidifying, discoloring, gnawing away, sagging, penetrating, consuming. Processes that we observe in our bodies, in the world, and in the universe are reflected in the landscape of paint. For me, paint is any combination of pigment and a binding agent. And when painting, paint is more than a raw material; it is a companion, an ally. And like any respectable ally, it occasionally goes its own way."

Ilona studied Autonomous Visual Arts at the Minerva Academy and lives and works in Dorkwerd.

Ilse Brul (Enschede 1972)

Through impressions of natural environments such as the mudflats, islands, and high mountains, Ilse's paintings often depict sensory experiences. Her paintings show a specific landscape or a more concentrated experience of it. Synergistic and associative, these paintings give rise to dynamic compositions. The depiction of nature functions as a vehicle and mirror of a larger order in which everything is connected. This essence is revealed through traces of silt, pigment, and snow that interact subtly with the colorfulness of the paint. Where the earthly and the heavenly meet.

Ilse graduated from LO Tekenen Nijmegen (2nd degree), HKA Arnhem (1st degree) and Comparative Art Studies (KU Nijmegen), lives and works in Groningen.
