Mark Kolthoff
About this activity.
Mark Kolthoff (Amsterdam 1901-Laren 1993) made a remarkable contribution to Dutch art by consistently seeking the essence of abstraction in his paintings, watercolors, and works on paper. He carefully and deliberately engaged with the art of his time, whether geometric, cubist, or lyrical in nature.
Almost his entire oeuvre has been preserved as a legacy. A selection from this legacy is now on display for the first time in many years.
Kolthoff studied at the Rijksakademie, had contacts with Gerrit Rietveld—who furnished his first home—visited Piet Mondrian in Paris, collaborated with Joris Ivens, and joined the important post-war movements Vrij Beelden (Free Images), Creatie (Creation), and Liga Nieuw Beelden (New Images League). He taught for many years at the Rietveld Academy and chaired the Royal Subsidy (now the Royal Award for Free Painting). His oeuvre constitutes a valuable addition to the Dutch visual arts of the twentieth century. The exhibition shows paintings from the period 1950-1990 and some works on paper from the 1970s.
Opening hours: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 6:00 p.m., and by appointment
