City of 'De Ploeg'
About this activity.
Groningen. A city with a vibrant centre that its residents simply refer to as “the City” (Stad) — to make it clear that they are talking about the city and not the province. On 5 June 1918, a group of students from the Minerva art academy founded the art circle De Ploeg here. Their goal: to renew and shake up what they considered to be the “conservative” art world.
The exhibition Stad van De Ploeg (City of De Ploeg) transports you to Groningen as it was a century ago. A time when trams still ran through the city, the canals had not yet been filled in and there were still lots of cars driving around the city centre. Discover the important places of the early De Ploeg painters and see, through the work of contemporary painters, how some of these locations have now changed beyond recognition. How does the city serve as a source of inspiration for today's creators?
