Now on View in the Art Rental: Maaike Nijlunsing – Close to Home

Kunstpunt Groningen
22 January 2026 to 28 February 2026

About this activity.

Abandoned buildings, silent spaces and traces of the past. In Close to Home, Maaike Nijlunsing presents paintings of places where time seems to have stood still. From 22 January to 28 February, her work will be on view at the Art Rental of Kunstpunt Groningen, as part of Atelier Collection: Solo.

Maaike Nijlunsing paints abandoned buildings and locations that have lost their original function. These are often industrial sites where there was once a great deal of activity. That contrast lies at the heart of her work. Maaike says: These places used to be full of life. Now they are quiet and hollow. The traces of human presence are still clearly visible.”

For this exhibition, Maaike stayed close to home. She found plenty of inspiration in the north of the Netherlands. Among other subjects, she painted a farmhouse on the Hogeland, an abandoned swimming complex on Ameland, and an aluminium foundry in Farmsum during demolition. These are places that often remain unseen, but which regain attention in her paintings.

The photographs Maaike takes on location form the starting point for the paintings she creates in her studio. She does not paint the place itself, but rather the experience, impression and atmosphere of it. In her work, she explores how space and depth can be suggested on a flat surface. Light and layering play an important role, visible in peeling walls, damp stains, mould and other signs of decay.

Maaike’s Selection
Alongside her own work, Maaike also presents a personal selection from the Art Rental: Maaike’s Selection. This offers insight into her sources of inspiration and artistic preferences. All works on display are available to view, borrow or purchase.
