Michiel Burger (b. 1983, Yamoussoukro) is a Dutch artist whose work investigates how images generate meaning and how history and documentation shape our perception of the world. While drawing on documentary forms, Burger deliberately challenges their conventions. Authorship is a recurring concern in his practice: who speaks, who controls the narrative, and what happens when that position becomes uncertain? Often working collaboratively, he blurs the lines between fact and fiction, personal and collective memory, history and montage, creator and subject. His work navigates the space between seriousness and humor, characterized by an ironic, sometimes cynical, reflection on the human desire for order, truth, and stability within an inherently unstable reality.

Burger’s work has been exhibited at renowned institutions including Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), FOMU Fotomuseum (Antwerp), Bozar (Brussels), Lagos Photo Festival (Nigeria), MoMA PS1 (New York), and Shibaura House (Tokyo).
