Jeffrey Linker (born 1984, Tolbert) makes black-and-white drawings in charcoal and white chalk. His work explores light, darkness and space. Charcoal gives him great freedom, allowing him to create a velvet-like texture and layered depth. What at first appears empty gradually reveals subtle variation. “As you grow accustomed to the absence of light, you start to discover more and more within the dark.”
At Galerie Noord, Linker presents recent work. Part of the exhibition is based on Polaroid photographs of interior spaces. These small, square images served as studies for large-scale drawings — a technically and compositionally precise process. The centrepiece is a 2.5 by 2.5 metre drawing suspended freely in the space. Alongside it he shows a new series inspired by the architecture and light of the gallery itself.
Where white in his earlier work mainly represented what was not black, it now functions as an independent element within the image. White brings air, light and tension into the composition, strengthening the effect of the dark.
Jeffrey Linker studied at Minerva Art Academy in Groningen and works as both artist and teacher.

Galerie Noord richt zich op autonoom, experimenteel en onderzoekend werk in vrijwel alle disciplines. We willen bezoekers verrassen door tentoonstellingen te bieden met een wisselend karakter.
Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
