Freedom is Fluid

Paul&Albert

About this artwork.

Freedom is Fluid is a bronze maple tree stump in the Liberation Forest, designed by the artist duo Paul&Albert — Paul Mulder (1979) and Albert Buring (1977). A ‘silent form’ among thousands of living trees. The work is about freedom. A date is inscribed in the heart of the stump: a historical anchor point, the moment when freedom was regained. Around this date, the annual rings become increasingly irregular in shape towards the outside. In this way, the work depicts how freedom evolves over time.

Freedom is Fluid marked not only the end of the commemorative year 80 Years of Freedom Groningen in 2025, but also the beginning of an enduring dialogue about what freedom means.
