ME, MYSELF AND MY SHADOW | Lin-Shi Kok
About this activity.
Exhibition October 31st – November 29th. Lin-Shi Kok was an artist-in-residence at the Bierumer School during September and October. The opening of her exhibition at the Bierumer School is on Friday, October 31st.
Lin-Shi Kok is an artist from Groningen and graduated from the Minerva Academy in 2024. She is carving a path through the art world with expressive and colorful creations that often explore themes of connection and comfort. Lin's preferred medium is textiles, chosen for their soft and comforting qualities. Her characters, playful and humorous, possess a subtle idiosyncrasy. Whether it's paintings, prints, fabrics, or ceramics, Lin always strives to transport the viewer into her own vibrant and unique world. This world often revolves around the search for connection and security. But if you look closely, you'll see through all the color, joy, and expressiveness that it's not an easy quest.
Lin-Shi Kok herself about her work: “My work is always, in a way, a quest for connection and security. For me, you can find these two things in the relationships you have with other people. The relationship you develop with others is not only very pleasant, but also often complicated and uncomfortable. I find that conflict that always exists in human relationships an interesting starting point for my work. The connection I seek is visible in my work through figures intertwined, a hand on a head, tongues touching, gazes meeting, and so on. The physical contact I depict often has something unnatural about it, making it look both pleasant and uncomfortable at the same time. I find that friction important because I believe that is precisely the feeling that every kind of relationship entails. Whether it’s a friendship, a love affair, or a family relationship.
In recent years, I’ve been working a lot with textiles, and it reinforces themes of safety, connection, and security. Fabric has a soft and comforting quality and is often used for protection. Textiles are a medium where something "It lies intimately within you, when you see it, you want to touch it. You can disappear into it, and you can wrap yourself in it. It offers protection and warmth."
The opening of the exhibition "ME, MYSELF AND MY SHADOW" will take place on Friday, October 31st, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. That afternoon, Paula Biemans will be in conversation with Lin-Shi Kok about her work at the Bierumer School. The exhibition will then run until November 27th.
