Jochem Hamstra - 'The knife between hunger and pleasure'

Kunsthandel Peter ter Braak
5 October 2025 to 26 October 2025

About this activity.

Jochem Hamstra (Heerenveen 1962) is a "loner," an artist who operates from a relative isolation. This isolation doesn't hinder his engagement with the world; it even seems to be a prerequisite for focusing on what he finds valuable. Hamstra has broad cultural interests—ranging from visual art, literature, film, and poetry to music—knows his classics, and is fully aware of current events. With iron self-discipline, he works tirelessly and with utmost dedication on his oeuvre,
which is initially difficult to define due to its sheer diversity.

Hamstra's painting moves between figuration and abstraction, always grounded in visual perception and often featuring disruptive interventions that disrupt the image. The artist's fascination with human instincts, life, and death converge in his layered work, which eschews mannerism, ostentation, or superficiality.
In this way, the painter reflects on himself and the world around him. Merciless, raw, and direct.

'Something has happened, or something is about to happen. You could call this the theme of my new work (the fates).
These paintings, inspired by the Caravaggios, Ribera, and Van Honthorst, depict a group of people in a dark, indefinable space.
Is it a nightclub, a bomb shelter?
In these paintings (neon Baroque), I used the very latest technology,
namely A.I. (ANALOG INTELLIGENCE)'
