'Grau Quadrat' by PLG
About this activity.
From October 1st to 31st, 2025, Pitt L. Grosse (PLG), an artist from Ost-Friesland, will exhibit a 2019 mail art work on cardboard at the window gallery "De Prachtvink" at the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.
Grau Quadrat is a 2019 mail art artwork measuring 10 x 15 cm. A gray piece of paper is glued to a piece of gray cardboard, used as a postcard, in the shape of a square. The text "Grau – Quadrat, gezackt/ gezahnt, scherenschnitt 1/1 09.02.19" is written next to the square. The reverse side features two stamps with the text "Grey is old white" and "Gray is old black," as well as a famous German proverb originating from the German Peasants' War of the 16th century: "Als Adam grub & Eva spann, wo war denn da der Edelmann. The metal eyelet in the card is typical of PLG's work. This makes it one of a large series of cards that PLG sent worldwide between 2010 and 2020.
This small work brings together major themes. The visual aspect of the front is a nod to Kazimir Malevich's famous Black Square from 1913. A century after the creation of that revolutionary painting, art has entered a world of fifty shades of gray: the hard square is frayed; gray is the old white and black. It also casts the classic proverb in a different light. Unlike the original social context of the 16th century, which was still vividly felt and urgent in Malevich's world, the words now take on a hint of longing for the gentleman who distinguishes between beauty and banality, but with an almost unbearable lightheartedness.
Pitt L. Grosse is a Frisian artist from Lower Saxony. He is a multifaceted person. He was once a teacher, then a househusband, and is first and foremost an artist. He is internationally known as a mail art representative under the abbreviation PLG. He is widely praised for his object art. His greatest passion is creating art display cases. Grosse's work is exhibited worldwide in mail art exhibitions.
The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is illuminated until 11:00 PM.
Each month, a new artwork by a different artist is exhibited.
