Exhibition "Home Sweet Home"
About this activity.
Starting Wednesday, August 27th, the new exhibition Home Sweet Home will be on display at Galerie Forma Aktua. This diverse exhibition features works by Froukje Dijkstra, Lily Hogeveen, and Matty de Vries.
Froukje Dijkstra: Traces of Earth, Fire, and Wonder
My fascination with design is expressed in my visual work. Architecture, especially my houses and buildings, is my source of inspiration. Rhythm and the repetition of rhythm are always present in my work. You could say they are impressions of houses and buildings. For people, a house is essential; it is our home; we furnish it so that we feel at home. Unfortunately, having a home is not for everyone. In war zones, people are driven from their homes, houses are destroyed, and sometimes become uninhabitable. My works, "ruins," arose from this; they are my impressions through which I express something essential to people: a safe place to live. The design, inspired by the beauty of nature (such as the underwater world), is expressed in my objects; they are solidified forms that also occur in nature. Nature can have a healing effect and alleviate the misery that exists in the world. My works are not exact copies of reality; they are my impressions.
Each work bears traces of earth, fire, and also of my own sense of wonder.
Lily Hogeveen Work with the picturesque language of the Haiku
My work displays a dynamic synthesis of figuration and abstraction. The subjects, which can range from houses, trees, fish, and birds to shoes and footprints, and the theme of the vulnerable human being, may have a figurative origin, but are never realistic. My working method can therefore be described as spontaneous, associative, without a specific end goal in mind. The resulting paintings have a characteristic formal language for me, exploring the effects of color, lines versus planes, shapes versus formlessness, and symmetry versus asymmetry. I actually have a very unique way of working, which means that my cityscapes, for example, give no impression of scale or dimensions. By positioning myself more or less directly opposite the houses in my imagination, I can paint "straight ahead." This creates a flat image of facades without surroundings and without a horizon.
My "Fish Paintings" often have the themes of repetition, rhythm, movement, and stillness. I call them "Meditations."
When a painting is finished, words emerge naturally in the form of a Haiku (a Japanese three-line poem). The picturesque language of the Haiku closely resembles the images my paintings evoke.
Example of a Haiku: whoever loves does not know
that he shines like water
and swims like a fish
Besides being a visual artist, I am also a Gestalt Psychosynthesis therapist and a writer. Spirituality, lightness, and humor play an essential role in all three of these disciplines.
Matty de Vries Art: The Bridge to My Life
Space arises within me from silence. In that space, a number of basic shapes—square, triangle, circle—appear in oil paint on canvas or panel, and an image emerges. These are images of landscapes where time takes on a different dimension, where you can dream away and wander, and where you later perceive previously unseen visual elements. The colors are warm and seem to emit an almost transparent light. For several years now, I have lived in the countryside, where space and silence are often literally all around you. This is reflected in my paintings.
Besides painting, I work as an illustrator and designer, writer, and cabaret artist. Simplicity and directness are key principles in my design and illustrations. My cabaret is lighthearted. All these working methods are reflected in my poetry and books. I give workshops to children and adults.
In 2021, my book "Kunst de brug naar mijn leven" (Art the Bridge to My Life) about my work and life was published.
