Symposium on 'Signals of You' | part of the Noorderlicht Biennale 2025

About this activity.

What role do we play in these digital environments? Who has access to these invisible layers, and who is excluded? And what does it mean to make such ubiquitous yet hidden signals visible?

These are all questions central to the Radioscapes Symposium, which will be held on Sunday, August 31st. Signals from You is central to this; the installation that Christy Westhovens created specifically for the Tschumi Pavilion and is now part of the Noorderlicht Biennale.

📳 The work consists of series of orange panels: each panel represents a specific channel within the Bluetooth spectrum through which devices exchange data.

🔊 Every time information arrives, the panel in question receives a nudge, and our wireless communication becomes briefly visible.

During the Radioscapes Symposium, artists, scientists, and critics will come together to interpret the invisible landscape of signals and to further explore the work in Tschumi.

Program

Noon – 1.00 p.m.: Visit to the Noorderlicht Biennale at the Niemeyerfabriek (Paterswoldeweg 43)

1:30 – 2:30 p.m.: Data walk + visit to Signals of You (Tschumi Pavilion, Hereplein)

4:00 – 6:00 p.m.: Symposium at Noorderlicht (Akerkhof 12):

• Introduction by Christy Westhovens
• Roundtable discussion with artists, researchers, and guests
• Question-and-answer discussion

A manifesto has been published in connection with the event.
