Helsche Boosheit ('Hellish Anger')
About this activity.
During Pink Saturday, MONSTER ARCHIEF presents a queer church service with artists Milly, Doris Gemini and Sofía Murillo Lommers. They respond in performances to the homophobic book 'Helsche Boosheit' by preacher Henricus Carolinus van Byler from 1731. The service deals with religion, homosexuality, violence and healing. We reflect on Groningen's history of homophobic violence and reflect on the role of the church. Visitors of all sexualities and beliefs are invited. The service will take place on June 22, 7:00 p.m - 7:30 p.m., during Pink Saturday, in the Pelstergasthuis Church. Will we see you there?
Milly is a black, queer immigrant and trans woman from Trinidad and Tobago. For the Helsche Boosheit presents them the beginning and end of the liturgy, entitled: the funeral and the wedding. “During the reading sessions, I noticed many dualities in the history and continuity of the struggle between the church and queers and other minorities.”
Doris Gemini is a versatile artist with a strong focus on queer expression and visual storytelling. “I've always been intrigued (and terrified) by how black and white this world can be. There is always some form of duality present in everything.”
Sofía Murillo Lommers focuses on themes such as identity, community and spirituality. In their performance she uses queer herbal healing together with her community. “With my performance I want to invite dirt, filth and queerness into the church: a place that has been hostile to both queer and indigenous identity for centuries.”
