Zoltin Peeter - The North and Beyond
About this activity.
The exhibition ‘Zoltin Peeter – Voorbij de Noord’ (The North and beyond) presents a wide choice from the large drawings by the artist Zoltin Peeter (1942-2019), together with works by artist friends and from the Museum Belvédère collection. The accent lies on some 60 drawings made by Zoltin Peeter in the past 25 years, showing abstracted landscapes that were inspired by the nature of Norway and Iceland. Also on view is work by artist friends, among whom Machteld van Buren, André de Jong, Dolph Kessler, Peter Otto, Egbarta Veenhuizen and Ids Willemsma.
After his education at the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs, later Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Zoltin Peeter (1942-2019) developed into one of the main artists of his generation. with monumental etchings and spatial work. After a stay in Antwerp he decided to settle in the Frisian countryside in order to concentrate on his work in seclusion. It became his home base for many trips to even more northerly regions, such as Iceland and Norway.
The numerous impressions of imposing mountain ranges, plains, coastal regions and waterfalls Zoltin gathered on his trips through the northern landscapes were recorded in concise sketches. An important place is reserved for the Iceland waterfall Dynjandi. In his studio the sketches are the starting-point for medium-sized (about 65 x 50 cm) and large (about 200 x 150 cm) drawings.
In his drawings Zoltin Peeter translates the impressions gathered on his trips into his own unique imagery. Appearances in nature are transformed into a symbol, an image, a sign. However, he does not intend to translate those specific impressions of nature. He goes a step further and creates his own unique worlds:
“I want to conquer that nature and use my impressions of it to develop an imagery of my own. It is the same and completely different as well. I can play around this starting-point and in doing so create new mountains, waterfalls, clouds and rainbows.” - Zoltin Peeter
Together the diverse abstracted motives form totally new worlds in which lines, forms and planes create mainly space.
