Proud, resolute and almost heroic, they stand scattered like beacons in the Groningen landscape. They often appear on top of a mound, such as in Ezinge. This of course concerns all the churches in Groningen. Sturdy churches that is. With this exhibition, Museum Wierdenland puts the Groningen churches in the spotlight.

For many members of the then young Groningen artists' association De Ploeg, the churches in their province were a favorite subject. Discover the sturdy Groningen churches through the eyes of artists such as Johan Dijkstra, Jan Wiegers, Jannes de Vries and other early Ploeg members. Most of the paintings, drawings and graphics on display have never been shown in a museum before.

The residents of Groningen have been asked to submit their most beautiful, most special or most precious black and white photo of a Groningen church. A selection of these is part of the exhibition.
