Fiep on wheels

Museum Nienoord
4 November 2023 to 15 September 2024

About this activity.

From Saturday 4 November, Fiep Westendorp's popular characters such as Jip and Janneke, Pim and Pom and Pluk van de Petteflat will populate the National Carriage Museum.

There are illustrators who seamlessly followed the trends of their time, but also who gave a face to several generations. Fiep Westendorp (1916 Zaltbommel – 2004 Amsterdam) belongs to the latter category. And decades after her death, her illustrations still look as fresh, energetic and sometimes naughty as they did half a century ago. Just like the work of the friends she worked with, such as Annie M.G. Schmidt.

Fiep is now one of the most leading, well-known and beloved illustrators in Dutch cultural history. Amid the museum pieces in the National Carriage Museum, we can shine a completely new light on her work. As a child she saw the first automobiles enter Zaltbommel and, as an illustrator, she saw the last horse-drawn carriages disappear from the Amsterdam street scene.

Museum Nienoord and the heirs united in the Fiep Westendorp Foundation together selected drawings showing the most colorful, cheerful and cheerful old-timers, omnibuses and horse-drawn carriages. Pluk's car, Longhors sofa: they even come to the museum hall! All this for those who want to feel wonderfully young again in Nienoord in the coming months. Regardless of his or her own age.
