Peter Meijer & Maike van der Kooij: 'Captured by Groningen’s landscape'

About this activity.

Two artists who are captivated by the beauty and monumental character of the Groningen landscape and who each depict this in their own way. Both artists have their roots in the Randstad and that is perhaps one of the reasons that they are both so impressed and inspired by this landscape.

Maike van der Kooij (ABK The Hague) is a painter, draftsman and teacher. She has lived in Groningen since the 1990s and was immediately captivated by the wide, impressive landscape. She often works on location, absorbing the essence of the landscape and capturing it in sharp, quick sketches. Over the years she developed her specific style: an expressive, moving handwriting and a paint skin that is sometimes skimpy and then painted pasty. She is not concerned with a faithful reproduction, rather she searches for the essence and character of the landscape. Her canvases are layered and beneath the skin of paint lies a different world, that of experiencing the landscape.

Peter Meijer (ArtEZ, Arnhem) came to live in the Groningen countryside in the eighties. Just like van der Kooij, he draws his inspiration from the vastness, life on the clay and all the elements that constantly change the landscape. His paintings are made up of colored lines and surfaces on a white background. The background often remains partially visible and gives the painting depth and relief. His flawless sense of composition and use of color result in poetic images in which abstraction and stylized realism enter into a perfect collaboration. The painting itself is done intuitively and without a preconceived plan. All experiences from previously made works are applied when making new work. Over time, his work has constantly evolved. His work can now be divided into five themes: man, forest, birds, cities, mountains and landscapes. These themes often overlap, but in this exhibition with Maike the emphasis is on life - nature - in the landscape.
