Betty Simonides en Gerrit ter Beek

For years Gerrit ter Beek painted human figures in highly simplified spaces. He has now abandoned figuration and explores space itself. With the people gone, empty interiors and stylised houses emerge in an environment. Inspired by Renaissance painters, he often uses elements such as perspective and centre of gravity. He searches for a certain stillness as he paints using black, white and shades of grey. His pictures oscillate between reality and illusion. 

Betty Simonides creates spatial objects. She is fascinated by material, shape and light and tries to intensify the experience of these in her work, for instance by subtle additions of paint. During the creation process, she constantly experiments with the influence of colour and light on the appearance of the material of the object she is working on. She likes to work in series to make the results of this experiment visible. She displays her objects side by side, in a construction, or seemingly carelessly set down. 

Ter Beek and Simonides became fascinated by each other's work and entered into a collaboration. In this they explore how their work relates to each other. They show the result of this search in In the Gallery. Both artists live and work in Assen.

Galerie Noord.

Galerie Noord is een expositieruimte in hartje Groningen. Vierwekelijks bieden we kunstenaars uit het Noorden de mogelijkheid recent werk te tonen, solo of in kleine groepen. Galerie Noord richt zich op autonoom, experimenteel en onderzoekend werk in vrijwel alle disciplines. We willen bezoekers verrassen door tentoonstellingen te bieden met een wisselend karakter. 
 
Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
