About this activity.
PaperCuts / 5/2 – 5/3 2023
Alice Slyngstad | Ra'fat Ali | Mariana Jurado Rico | Oliver Doe
OPENING: Saturday, February 5 at 4 p.m.
With workshop by Mariana Jurado Rico (learning to let go of expectations of success), performance by Oliver Doe, spoken word by Ra'fat Ali.
PaperCuts shows visualizations of language, writing, communication and codes in relation to identity and attitude. Oliver Doe, Ra'fat Ali, Mariana Jurado Rico, Alice Slyngstad present their ideas with performances, installations, paintings, pamphlets and other media.
The work of Oliver Doe (1994, UK) considers the volatility of queer identities primarily from a linguistic point of view. Hen explores queer communication through different levels of coding and abstraction, combining the visual aspect of texts with performative and descriptive matters and meanings. In SIGN, Oliver presents a selection of paintings, combined with new text-based works and performances. She also makes pamphlets with stimulating performative texts, distributed in public space. Performances will be given at the opening on 5/2 and during the finissage on 5/3.
Alice Slyngstad (1990, NO) investigates performance as a medium, method and point of view. His work weaves through layers of different audiences, with perspectives that question: who or what is performing for whom? Writing and text are central, as is the question of what performative role do elements such as light, sound, space, screens, etc. play in space. Process, practice and presentations are characterized by the exploration of language, voices and stories. For PaperCuts, Alice presents the work "Goodie Bags", which is based on a text exploring physical learning through interfaces that distribute goods, sexual desire or information. The work traces sensitivities and memories from the private sphere to a public, interconnected environment.
The collection of information, bodies and desires is systematized and animated by the gathering in Goodie Bags detritus, as it were a shed skin. Attention is constantly shifting between micro and macro, constantly looking for gaps, holes and spaces to fit in. The communication takes place through the installation, between opposition screens that place the viewer between the material
Mariana Jurado Rico (1991, CO) creates conditions for fusion between people. Her work is partly formed by the word NO: as an image, a symbol, a vibe, as a mood. It's about failure as a motto, an instrument of resistance, a way of life. During Papercuts she will present the work 'I would prefer not to: we want to fail.', a combination of previous research into the word 'NO' and an opportunity for dialogue with the environment in which the visitor has input in dealing with the visual expressions of the word. In the workshop she gives during the opening of PaperCuts, you can let go of your expectations of success. Her graphic riso printed pamphlets will be found throughout the city.
This project was realized in collaboration with: Clara Rojas, Coillin O' Connell, Finn Wagner, Gabriela Carrasquilla, Oriol Cabarrocas, Juan Sebastian Rosillo. And was also possible thanks to the support, time and contributions of Ciara O' Kelly, Nicolas Vizcaino, Valeria Giraldo, Milena Bonilla, Edinson Quiñones, Samuel Baena, Tatyana Zambrano, Ana Millan, Sergio Roman, Francisca Khamis, Levi Van Gelder, Margaux Koch , Letterpress workshop (Joos and Theo) and Screen printing Workshop (Naigel, Christina) of the Rietveld Academie.
Globalization and diaspora make building an individual identity for Ra'fat Ali (1991, SY) a complex struggle, a difference between what belongs to him and what does not. Through technology and language he creates an understanding of a hybrid identity, and what you can lose; dreams, images, places and words are left behind. In his installation he plays with the descriptive function of the word and the image by swapping their roles. Ra'fat Ali creates a film installation in SIGN in which he plays with the descriptive function of words and images in a film by swapping their roles. For this he created a 3D virtual environment where he creates a “wholeness” by using an orthographic camera to display the film. Inserting text into this 3D environment was a challenge to convert a function from a text to an image and vice versa. The other part was building a smoke tunnel where he could visually represent the vacuum behind him. This installation was a construction of a closed transparent space in a Dutch landscape. This was filmed and is now presented together with the space in the final film installation. Combining these two methods of the flying objects and the angle of totality, he is willing to discover and explore this sense of what a hybrid identity means in relation to language and the related state of mind.
