Unpredictable encounters transform us; we are not in control, even of ourselves
Radina Kordova
About this artwork.
The organic, almost flowing form of this sculpture on the Zernike grounds is inspired by photographs of dancers taken with a camera with a long shutter speed. This technique allows the transition from one movement to another to be captured, which is reflected in the undulating shape of the sculpture.
What is special about Unpredictable Encounters is that the work is made with materials that have not often been used for art in public space. Radina Kardova made the sculpture from mycelium, the root-like fungal threads of fungi, and applied a protective layer of hemp concrete over it. Both materials are biodegradable, which means that the sculpture will also disintegrate over time. The long title of the work refers to this process, but also to our connection with the natural world around us.
Kardova developed Unpredictable Encounters at the request of the Hanze Art Committee. Although she used relatively new materials, she returned to classical techniques in the sculpting process, from woodworking to papier-mâché techniques.
