Transitory Oasis

Hadassah Emmerich

About this artwork.

Colorful fantasy landscapes in flowing colors: this is what the work of art that artist Hadassah Emmerich created on the inside of the Papiermolentunnel looks like. The 70-meter-long tunnel has six colorful landscapes on both sides. Water (a reference to the swimming pool nearby) and nature are recurring themes. The landscapes are separated by colored strips, and the colors are also continued on the ceiling. The tunnel almost turns into an exhibition hall, says the artist, where you encounter new worlds and perspectives while cycling or walking. Emmerich hopes that users of the underpass will experience it as a dream world.

The landscapes are collages. Emmerich uses a special technique for this, which combines analogue and digital methods. She starts from her painting, which she then digitizes and processes into a composition on her computer. The texture of the original painted elements is still clearly visible. Emmerich printed the compositions on foil for the Paper Mill Tunnel. This was then folded around the edges of each tunnel segment, instead of being placed flat against the wall. This creates a subtle three-dimensional effect, and the work, as it were, moves along with the tunnel.

Hadassah Emmerich is an internationally active artist. Transitory Oasis is her first work in public space, and the largest work she has made to date.
