From September 1 to September 30, 2022, John M. Bennett, an artist from Columbus Ohio, USA, will exhibit a mail art work 'The Rugged Pal Illegible Night School' in window gallery 'De Prachtvink' at shopping center Vinkhuizen, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.
The Rugged Pal Illegible Night School is a work in four parts. Bennett has processed four postcard-sized pieces of cardboard with an inkjet printer and stamps. He sent this quartet together with an artist statement under the title 'explains' and a mini catalog 'Illegible' as mail art. Bennett produced the series from May to July 2022. In this entry, he explores the limits of comprehensibility. He playfully fills in the theme 'illegible'. He does not necessarily see illegible as badly printed or dull text, but the magical point where letters merge into image. In his own words: 'My hand a skull suit's folded sheet. Open the box ahead yr wind'.
John M. Bennett, (1942) studied English and Spanish. From 1969 to 1976, he worked as an assistant professor of Spanish at Ohio State University. Bennett was a volunteer poetry therapist at Central Ohio Psychiatric Hospital from 1979 to 1986. From 1975 to 2005, he was editor of the visual poetry magazine Lost and Found Times. Since 1998, he has curated the Avant Writing Collection, the William Burroughs Collection, and the Cervantes Collection of the Ohio State University Library. He is still very active in visual poetry, experimental writing and mail art. The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is illuminated until 11 p.m. Each month a new artwork by an artist is showcased.
