Johann Faber

About this artwork.

Johann Faber (1902 – 1979) was a visual artist and already active at the age of twelve at the Minerva Academy Groningen, where he studied lithography. Faber used various techniques, such as brush sketches, lithographs, etchings, watercolors and oil paint. In 1922 he became a candidate member of the Groningen art society De Ploeg. In 1933 he was unanimously admitted as a working member of De Ploeg, after having exhibited in a living room exhibition. He took part in the annual Ploeg exhibitions well into the 1970s, taking part in more than 80 exhibitions.

In his early days, his work was related to the modern styles of the time, such as Art Nouveau and Naturalism. Over time, his technique acquired a more robust character and he found his themes in the landscape of North Drenthe and Groningen, in which the low horizon is particularly characteristic. The van Faber family donated the painting Landscape to the municipality.
