Corn humps in Zeegse
Henk Melgers
About this artwork.
Henk Johan Melgers (1899 - 1973) was a Groningen painter and grew up in an orphanage on the Oude Ebbingestraat in Groningen. Melgers enrolled at the Minerva Academy at the age of seventeen. In 1920 he left for Amsterdam to return to the city of Groningen in 1925. He joined art society De Ploeg, where he often collaborated with fellow artist Johan Dijkstra. In Amsterdam he had already exhibited at the exhibitions of The Independents. Melgers exhibited at both associations to raise awareness of his work. That was very necessary because he was often in need of money.
In 1927 Melgers moved to Zeegse in Drenthe, where he found inspiration for the painting Corn humps in Zeegse. The painting was purchased in 1932 for 125 guilders, from a collection of paintings sent by the art society De Ploeg. This work is one of the first Ploeg paintings that the municipality of Groningen bought to support artists financially.
