PHONES ONLY
20 mei t/m 17 juli 2016
Photographic journey
The camera phone forms a central part of PHONES ONLY by Sander Veenhof and Adri Schokker. The massively popular device has caused many changes in the way in which we handle photography, how we photograph and why we photograph. But the photo as proof that we have been somewhere has always remained the same. Except during PHONES ONLY, when your phone goes out on its own to shoot images of a place you are unable to go yourself.
From 20 May to 17 July, a toy train will pass through the Pavilion. Every Saturday, from 12 noon to 5 p.m., visitors will have the opportunity to allow their mobile phone to ride the train. A guard makes sure that the video function is switched on on every phone and any disasters are prevented. As soon as the phone starts its journey, the recording starts of a journey through the past, present and future of photography. On arrival at the end station, phones are returned to their rightful owners, then it becomes apparent that a video clip has been recorded that is made up of all the images lined up along the route.
It is also possible to contribute to PHONES ONLY, as anyone can send in photographs. A selection from these photos will be made every Friday. Along the route are screens on which the selected photos are displayed in quick succession, so each phone records a unique video clip.
With thanks to RHC Groninger Archieven and Beeldbank Groningen for providing historic photographic material.
