'Ik' en de 'ander' ('I' and the 'other') by Geert Mul
Geert Mul covered the Tschumi Pavilion from top to bottom with printed, transparent films. This creates a skin on the Pavilion with a printed image story about the relationships and distinctions between technology and nature. From the inside, the films are illuminated with LED lights that are permanently changing colour, constantly creating new images on the walls of the Pavilion.
The 'I' exists by the grace of 'external' stimuli. Without stimuli of the senses, the brain dies like the roots of a plant without water.
The relationship between technology and the 'I' is like the relationship between nature and the body; we inhale to be able to talk. We are outside air, we are technology.
Consciousness is not what we are. Consciousness is the semi-permeable wall that mediates between who we want to be and what we need to be.
Geert Mul uses the Tschumi Pavilion combined with photographic prints and LED light as a medium for a visual exploration of the relationships and distinctions between technology and nature, between 'I' and 'the other'.
