Wall mosaics former Juliana school Hoogkerk (5 parts)
Klaas van Dijk
About this artwork.
Five colorful mosaics depict children playing, busy jumping rope, hooping, making music, dancing and playing ball. Artist Klaas van Dijk (1913-1990) made the cheerful mosaics in the 1960s for the Koningin Julianaschool in Hoogkerk, after it had undergone a thorough renovation. The school has now been converted into a number of homes, but the mosaics are a lasting reminder of the history of the location.
Klaas van Dijk was a sculptor, painter, draftsman, and member of De Ploeg. Various works by his hand can be seen on the streets throughout Groningen, with perhaps the best-known example being Haan, on the Ubbo Emmiussingel. Art, Labour, The Family, The Dance in the Kostverloren district is also a prominent work from his oeuvre. The wall mosaics are the only mosaics of his that can be seen in Groningen.
