Torch, Kingfisher and Taking You There (Toorts, Kingfisher en Taking you there)
Hans Rikken
About this artwork.
Three statues by Hans Rikken can be found in the garden at Broerplein. These statues are entitled Torch, Kingfisher and Taking You There. Torch is a 2.6-m-high “torch” made of oak and shell-bearing limestone. Kingfisher and Taking You There are both combinations of stone with copper on wood and are 2.1 m and 1.9 m high respectively.
Torch was made in 1992 for the Verschuivingen (roughly translated as ‘displacement’) sculpture project, which was organised by the art foundation Kunststichting de Werkplaats Borne.
Hans Rikken then created Kingfisher and Taking You There in 2011.
The public library has displayed Hans Rikken sculptures in this garden since 1997.In 2019, the library moved to the Forum Groningen and the building was transferred to the University of Groningen. After a redesign of the garden, the statues have been on display again since 2024.
