Marnix Sixma
Marnix Sixma (1991) is a visual artist. In 2019 he graduated cum laude from the Minerva Academy in Groningen.
“Two years ago I published an artist book. It was my first time making a book as work, and it left me wanting more. However, in the course of time I started to make a lot of other work, and my newfound love faded into the background again. For project Lucht I therefore wanted to return to the artist’s book.
I started experimenting with the medium. What would happen if I stopped a movie and turned its frames into pages? Is that much different from a movie? After all, a book also needs time to be experienced. You can only choose more consciously what you see and when. I then proceeded to do this with text. I found that when I let words fade away, it became much more dramatic in the form of a book. Then more layers came in. Each page at some point evoked the feeling of disappearing, the idea that something has ceased to exist. Because that process was stopped frame by frame, a different experience of a fade-out was created. In this way, the text had become a character in a film that had been shot as a book.”
About project 'Lucht'
The corona measures have hit the art sector enormously. Exhibitions and art grants have been canceled or postponed. It is an uncertain time for many artists. With the Lucht project, Kunstpunt Groningen wants to support artists and designers from the municipality of Groningen. 87 Groningen artists have received a stipend with which they have created new work, including Marnix Sixma. With a billboard exhibition from September 27 to October 17, we present all artists spread throughout the city of Groningen. View the work of the other artists here.
