Yawl (Tweemaster)
Hans Mes
About this artwork.
The design for this sculpture is based on the characteristics of this type of ship and in keeping with the name of the school (Het Anker – The Anchor) and the street names in this part of Lewenborg, which are mostly nautical. The sculpture is comprised of two masts with a yard and an upright rigging. A square sail is attached to the yard and the upright rigging is ropework along which sailors can climb.
All the parts of this piece are made from welded and hot-dipped galvanised steel which has then been powder-coated. Both masts and their racks look almost wooden, thanks to the ochre colour that was applied to these pieces. The upright rigging is similar in colour to rope.
Yawl was constructed with the idea of a climbing frame in mind.
