Kneeling woman (Geknielde vrouw)
Bastiaan de Groot
About this artwork.
On a marble plinth, a naked woman lies on her knees. With her hands in front of her face, she keeps her state of mind hidden. Is she happy or sad? Her posture rather radiates the latter.
The sculpture is made of Belgian bluestone, which has the property that so-called fire cracks can occur in it. This is also the case with this sculpture, “but at the time I didn't pay any attention to it when I was cutting it out”, says the artist.
Until the end of the 1970s Bastiaan de Groot worked mainly with figures. One of his most famous works from that period is Pregnant Annet (Zwangere Annet), which is situated in the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).
Since about 1980, De Groot’s sculptures have mostly been abstract in character. He specialises in carving natural stone, mainly marble and granite, which he imports from Portugal and Sweden with his own truck.
