Passage

About this artwork.
Passage is a covered walkway in the large square near the Vensterschool Koorenspoor. It consists of a narrow, 145-metre-long wooden canopy that forms a connecting route between the various buildings of the Vensterschool. In 49 places the wood is interrupted by a coloured glass plate on which parts map of the world can be seen. When sunlight falls on the glass, the countries are projected on the ground in all sorts of colours. In this way, children come into contact with art in a playful way; they can experience the play of light and when they look up they see colourful countries – or just colour spots – through which the sun, clouds, rain or birds “play”.
The schoolyard and Passage are not only about art, but also about borders. The square is an open area, but with clearly defined spaces for different age groups. Seen in this way, the “walkway” is a space on the border of two worlds: on the one hand a sheltered walking and playing area, on the other hand a corridor or route to the outside world.
