Beaver (Bever)

Jacob (Teun) Roosenburg

About this artwork.

On one of the corners at the top of the building at Sint Jansstraat 4, a limestone beaver is gnawing at a “tree”. The animal, which was made in 1964 by Teun Roosenburg, refers to the Provincial Water Board that was established in the building at the time. At the moment the Provincial Government is located there.

The beaver is an animal that lives in and around water. His food consists of leaves, bark, twigs, roots and herbs.

Teun Roosenburg and his wife Jopie Roosenburg-Goudriaan lived and worked at Kasteel Oost in Eijsden for many years. There they formed the vibrant centre of a group of visual artists, musicians, writers and actors. From these contacts came the school “Kasteel Oost en de Kunst”, which took figurative art as its starting point.
