Henri Daniel Guyot
Willem Valk
About this artwork.
Willem Valk made a large number of portraits, plaques and busts during his life. Initially they were mostly about friends and relatives, but from around 1930 onwards they were mainly commissioned works.
The sandstone bust of H.D. Guyot dates from 1939. Guyot was pastor of the Walloon (French speaking) Congregation in Groningen and founded in 1790 an institute to teach the deaf and dumb. This made it the first school for special education in the Netherlands.
The most striking parts of the bust are the frowned forehead and the mouth: Guyot holds his lips stiff together. It gives him a serious and determined look. The preacher is portrayed in ministerial attire (toga).
