Console with Stag

About this artwork.
The corner building on the Oude Ebbingestraat/Turfsingel features a sandstone console on which a stag with large antlers lies. The text on the console states: “Apotheek” (apothecary) and “Dr. H.G. Zaaijer”.
The stag, and more specifically the stag’s head and antlers, were often used by chemists and pharmacists in the past. Salt of stags’ horn was extracted from antlers: it was a smelling salt that could be used to awaken those who had fainted. The mortar and herbs depicted also refer to the former function of the building. On the mortar is a text that is difficult to decipher. The creator of the console is unknown.
