The Guards (De Wachters)
Louis Wolthers
About this artwork.
The stone guards in front of the main entrance of the Centre for Pharmacy at the University have an abstract and stocky shape. As a result, the trunk and limbs are indistinguishable from each other. The angular block representing the head shows the vague contours of a nose and eyes. The rough sections of the sculpture show where Louis Wolthers had been working with a hammer and chisel. The artist's working process has also left clear traces in the octagonal pedestal.
