About this artwork.
Above the door of the Mariënholm building there is an artificial stone relief of Mary with child.
Mariënholm was a Convent with a community of about 15 sisters of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Amersfoort. This congregation has its origins in Amersfoort, where, in 1822, a few young women began dedicating themselves, as women of the cloth, to the education of poor children.
The Sisters of Mariënholm also taught Catholicism and performed social tasks. The congregation, founded in Groningen in 1906, was initially housed at A-Kerkhof 22, but in 1957 they moved to this building on Merwedestraat. In the 1980s the Convent closed. Nowadays students are housed there.
