Untitled (boy with ball and girl figure- jongen met bal en meisjesfiguur)

Klaas van Dijk

About this artwork.

Made of hammered copper, this artwork was placed above the main entrance of the school building on Enno Dirk Wiersmastraat in 1951. A boy with a ball and a girl figure stand inside a frame. Abstract birds fly above them. The sculpture is a fascinating spectacle, especially because of the contrast between the massive and open shapes and the white brick background.

Klaas van Dijk, creator of this work of art, became best known for his manually hammered copper and aluminium wall objects and sculptures. But Van Dijk was also active in other fields of art. He also painted, created watercolours, drew and lithographed landscapes.

Van Dijk received his training from the well-known Groningen sculptor Willem Valk. In the nineteen-twenties and thirties, he was also a member of the Groningen artist group De Ploeg. Although the Netherlands was his home base, he also worked in France and the United States. In 1977, he received the cultural Egberts Prize in Groningen, for his services to De Ploeg, among other things. Van Dijk worked tirelessly to ensure that young artists would join this artists' collective.
