Untitled (Snap)
Nico Gerbenzon
About this artwork.
Snap is a highly simplified hand that is snapping its fingers. You can just see the sleeve of the festive jacket and the cuff of the shirt. Nico Gerbenzon created the sculpture for the City Paradise project in 1993. The artists who took part in this project chose a place for their work of art in the Noorderplantsoen. Gerbenzon chose a spot near the music dome. He thought the dome was far too little used for musical activities, hence the hand of the 'leader of the band', snapping his fingers to the beat of the music (snap).
After the exhibition, the Centrum Beeldende Kunst Groningen (CBK) wanted to buy the sculpture and place it at the entrance to the music centre De Oosterpoort. However, the statue was made of lime wood, so it was not suitable for permanent outdoor installation. That is why a mould was made of the sculpture and then a copy cast in polyester concrete. The rough cutting of the wooden original is still visible in the surface.
