Lyre Player (Lierspeelster)
Martin Tissing
About this artwork.
Initially, the artist's intention was to create a group of six figures – three musicians and three listeners – in a circle. The first plaster model that was made was Lyre Player, which was exhibited during a summer event. The Municipality purchased the work of art, had it cast in bronze and placed it next to a school building on Merwedestraat. Because the sculpture was no longer in keeping with the changing environment, in 1996 it was placed more centrally in the Rivierenbuurt neighbourhood, near the Vechtstraat A second sculpture in plaster, Listener (Luisteraar), was given a spot in the garden of Martin Tissing's former home: the Allersmaborg in Ezinge. There it crumbled over the years and was finally lost forever.
These two sculptures by Tissing are all that's left. Soon after the creation of the Lyre Player and Listener, the artist ultimately switched to painting. In his opinion, he had more talent for this and he developed faster in it.
