Fons Schobbers

About this artwork.

Now that the main entrance to the UMCG is now on the Hanzeplein, the old entrance on the Oostersingel is still used, although it has lost some of its lustre, hidden behind fences and buildings. So, wanting to mark this entrance more clearly, the UMCG Board of Directors commissioned Fons Schobbers to create a work of art. This commission resulted in a bronze sculpture more than two metres high and two metres wide, on a concrete plinth that is itself one-and-a-half metres high. The voluminous, smooth, polished sculpture with powerful lines and openings turns this hulking bronze sculpture into a striking “player in the field”.

In 2018 the sculpture is moved to another location on the UMCG terrain, nearby the Petrus Campersingel.
