Practice tool

“An important aspect of my practice is the relationship between play and work. This is often expressed in a visual language based on my work in the hospitality industry, especially in the kitchen. This time the starting point was not the hospitality industry but the environment around my studio For the project Lucht I chose a sculpture that I presented outside and that enters into a relationship with the playing field of the primary school next to my studio: the trampoline called Practice tool. One of my fondest memories of elementary school was gym class and the equipment we used to jump, swing, climb and fall. In my view, these devices were toys that we were allowed to use. Where the sculpture looks reliable, it can in fact not be used as a trampoline. I have removed the applicability of the object, making it only an image in the autonomous sense, in contrast to the robust basket made of steel that was already present on the field.”

About project 'Lucht'

The corona measures have hit the art sector enormously. Exhibitions and art grants have been canceled or postponed. It is an uncertain time for many artists. With the Lucht project, Kunstpunt Groningen wants to support artists and designers from the municipality of Groningen. 87 Groningen artists have received a stipend with which they have created new work, including Melle Aussems. With a billboard exhibition from September 27 to October 17, we present all artists spread throughout the city of Groningen. View the work of the other artists here.
