Gijs Deddens
Gijs Deddens is a visual artist, event organizer and musician. He graduated from Academy Minerva in 2007.
“My goal is to make paintings on large stone slabs in shapes yet to be determined. The choice of material is also a process that I am still in the middle of. I used to make paintings on concrete, but I want to investigate whether there are other materials that work well. On the coarse, stony surface I then make a kind of finger paint paintings from paper pulp soaked with paint colours. The pulp is made from old books and failed drawings. This results in a combination of a kind of stained glass ecclesiastical mosaics that are also reminiscent of colorful organic fungi, with a stone as the canvas. The texture of the soft, almost indefinable paper pulp/paint and the hard large stone results in a special clash between textures.”
About project 'Lucht'
The corona measures have hit the art sector enormously. Exhibitions and art grants have been canceled or postponed. It is an uncertain time for many artists. With the Lucht project, Kunstpunt Groningen wants to support artists and designers from the municipality of Groningen. 87 Groningen artists have received a stipend with which they have created new work, including Gijs Deddens. With a billboard exhibition from September 27 to October 17, we present all artists spread throughout the city of Groningen. View the work of the other artists here.
