Cas van Deurssen

Cas van Deurssen (1994) is a visual artist. In 2020 he graduated from Academy Minerva.

“In a contradictory way, my work arises through warped and gridded compositions that are interwoven like knitting. This pattern is the glue between shapeless outrageous gestures that seem to have no beginning or end, in contrast to silhouette-shaped surfaces and collage elements from my immediate environment. From a multi-medium manufacturing process I find a middle way between two extremes; as a result, the works often have an ambivalent character.
From my direct relationship with urban culture, I regularly generate new ideas. This could explain from a fellow townsman’s work schedule I found on the street to the symbolic value I attach to a strangely placed patch of paint on the side of a container. These traces contain a revealing factor in which the reflection or certain considerations of an individual can be traced on a small scale. Within my visual language, the elements I use often have both semiotic and abstract value.”

About project 'Lucht'

The corona measures have hit the art sector enormously. Exhibitions and art grants have been canceled or postponed. It is an uncertain time for many artists. With the Lucht project, Kunstpunt Groningen wants to support artists and designers from the municipality of Groningen. 87 Groningen artists have received a stipend with which they have created new work, including Cas van Deurssen. With a billboard exhibition from September 27 to October 17, we present all artists spread throughout the city of Groningen. View the work of the other artists here.
