The Four Seasons (De Vier Jaargetijden)
Jenne Hoekstra
About this artwork.
Nijestee housing corporation is creating new student accommodation in the Antillenstraat. The four container blocks contain 204 student studios; facilities are located in a communal courtyard. Four large pieces of art adorn the end walls of the housing blocks. The images together make up the four seasons. An animal figure has been chosen as a symbol for each season. The fish under the ice represent winter, the butterfly represents spring, the grasshopper represents summer and the caterpillar represents autumn.
Jenne Hoekstra has opted for organic shapes on white surfaces in order to “break open” the sleekly designed housing complex somewhat and give it a friendly appearance. His preference for Japanese line drawings is visible in the work. The brownish accents in the artwork consist of foil that glows golden when the sun shines on it.
