Hendrik Wester

J.A. Melken

About this artwork.

Close to the former Ten Boer town hall you will find a statue of the educational reformer Hendrik Wester (1752-1821). Standing behind a lectern, he looks out across the site where the village school used to be and where Wester started his teaching career at the age of twenty. During his working life, Wester wrote about many educational matters. His publications – about fifty in total – contributed significantly to the educational reform at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.

The statue was unveiled by the Queen's Commissioner at the time, on 20 June 1956. This concrete sculpture was created by N.V. Schokbeton in Elburg. It is assumed the designer of the statue, J.A. Milking, was somehow associated with this concrete company.

The memory of Hendrik Wester is kept alive in the city of Groningen by a plaque and inscription in the Martini Church
