Rooster by Klaas van Dijk gets a new spot at the Ubbo Emmiussingel

Together with Stadsbeheer, we have relocated the work of art by Klaas van Dijk Zonder titel from 1979. The work is also popularly referred to as Rooster (Haan). De Haan used to be on the Praediniussingel but had to be restored after vandalism. For this we engaged artist Hugo Hol. The statue now adorns the Ubbo Emmiussingel between the Groninger Museum and the Minervaflat. The new location was chosen in consultation with Klaas van Dijk's heirs and local residents.

The Rooster was originally located in Paddepoel. In 1979 the work was offered to the municipality of Groningen for the neighborhood center De Trefkoel. After it was badly damaged in 1980, the statue was removed. Seven years later, the Rooster was given a new location on the Praediniussingel. Unfortunately, Klaas van Dijk's statue there was more than once the target of vandalism, which meant that it had to be restored. The last restoration was completed in 2019 by artist and copper specialist Hugo Hol. Kunstpunt and Stadsbeheer were looking for a new place for the Rooster. Singeldorpers - as the residents of the canals call themselves - Leo Veenhof and Atze van Wieren made a proposal for the field at the Minervaflat. Diana Lourens, who manages works of art in public space: “We contacted the heirs of the artist about this proposal and they were enthusiastic. The very involved restorer is also pleased with the new location. We wish the Rooster a relaxing stay at the Minervaflat. The residents keep an eye on things.”
