VerzamelKunst - Galerie ter braak and Dutch and Belgian painting from the first half of the twentieth century
About this activity.
On the occasion of the presentation of the book:
Collecting Art - Galerie Ter Braak and Dutch and Belgian painting from the first half of the twentieth century, Kunsthandel Peter ter Braak shows paintings from this collection.
The book is about Galerie ter Braak in Zwolle and its idiosyncratic owner Rijn ter Braak. During 21 years of its existence, the art dealership Van Rijn ter Braak was in its building on the Melkmarkt, a Zwolle institution, known and loved by a loyal clientele. The Gallery specialized in Dutch and Belgian art from the first half of the twentieth century. Rijn used the philosophy that good art should be affordable. Galerie ter Braak convincingly showed that the art trade is not necessarily the domain of the super-rich and that museum-worthy art is accessible to art lovers with an average income.
The book is also about the unsuspecting art collector. The author describes how his transformation of art lover (someone who is interested in art but only this knows from a distance, from museums and books) to an art collector (someone for whom art is a passion becomes a necessity, a journey of discovery through an inexhaustible, enchanting world) was created. Great artists are inspired by them predecessors. The author shows how the aspiring art collector gradually develops become part of this conversation that spans geography and history artists among themselves, and between artists and their audiences. He describes how Rhine told him During the years that he was a regular visitor to the Gallery, art learned to be true to take. How he learned good from mediocre art through careful observation distinction and the joy it brings.
The book presents 15 highlights from the collection of Galerie ter Braak, as well as 3 favorite paintings of Rijn himself. The author presents each selected painting a brief life story of the artist in his or her time, followed by a discussion of the painting within the painter's oeuvre. All artists discussed in the book belong to the second group of Belgian and Dutch painting. None of these painters are part of the canon. Their work is not stratospheric prizes sold at auctions. But the book tries to show that the best work of These painters certainly belong to the story of painting in the Low Countries. This makes the book not only a biography of an art dealer, but also a much-needed one addition to the history of Dutch and Belgian painting twentieth century.
