De Oogst (The Harvest)
About this activity.
Hendrik de Vries (1896-1986) is one of the greatest Dutch multidisciplinary artists of the 20th century. In addition to his literary work, he drew and painted. The municipality of Groningen named the Hendrik de Vries Grant after this special versatile talent. An annual incentive prize for professional, young artists, with which they can create new work.
Artists have submitted plans for a chance to win the prize. From these plans, a jury chaired by Emily Kocken nominated three visual talents and four literary talents. In the Visual Arts category, these are Marnix Sixma, Davey Smand and Katayoon Valamanesh. Renske Marike van Dijk, Meinte Dirksen, Thomas van Essen and Maartje Terpstra were nominated in the Literature category. In this exhibition you can see recent work by all nominees.
Maartje Terpstra and Katayoon Valamanesh have won the grant jury prize. In addition to the grant, the young artists have a chance to win the audience award of € 1,000. Who will go home with the win? Vote for your favourite! Leave your ballot paper in the ballot box or vote online at kunstpuntgroningen.nl/stem.
The work of last year's winners should also be included in this exhibition. Leonard Witte won in the Visual Arts category and his work reflects on the history of the Netherlands. How did the people who lived here see themselves? And what outside influences have become part of their identity? Because Leonard transforms familiar elements into a fictional culture, they become part of an alienating world. A world where no one feels at home.
The grant for Literature went to Eise Ivo Smit in 2021. With the prize he has created an eclectic work, with all kinds of different language and text forms. You can recognize poetry, drama and prose. Although his plan for the grant focused on a single bee, the work has expanded to include several bees. Or, as Eise Ivo puts it: “Maybe even more about being with.”
The exhibition can be seen at Kunstpunt until 12 January. Around the summer of 2023, visual and literary talents can submit a plan for the Hendrik de Vries Grant again.
